What changes has laser brought to the way of glass processing?

The traditional way of glass cutting is to use a glass knife to cut manually. The glass knife is generally made of diamond, which is scored in advance, aligned with the ruler and cut in a straight line with uniform force. After the opening, the glass needs to be broken, but the cutting edge is often not smooth, and the glass needs to be polished with a sanding cloth until it is smooth. This method is applicable to 1-6mm thick glass, which has covered most of the glass products in life. For thicker glass, kerosene shall be added to the surface before cutting.
The seemingly backward cutting method is actually a common glass cutting method at present, which is still common in many glass processing stores and factories. Another method is to use glass cutting pieces to realize hand-held motor cutting, but it is also highly dependent on manual cutting. The cutting method of motor cutting blade is easy to produce a large amount of glass slag, which will pollute the surrounding environment, and the inadequate protective measures are also easy to cause harm to human body. The efficiency of these two artificial technologies is very low, and for plane glass, curve cutting and middle opening cutting are difficult to achieve and cannot ensure accuracy.

In recent years, laser processing technology has developed rapidly. The technological breakthrough of ultrafast laser has developed precision laser technology and penetrated into the field of glass processing. In principle, glass absorbs infrared laser much better than metal, and glass is a poor conductor of heat. The laser power required for glass cutting is much lower than metal. Laser cutting glass has developed from nanosecond ultraviolet laser to picosecond laser and even femtosecond laser. With the sharp decline of the price of laser equipment, its use cost has decreased a lot.
However, in terms of cost, the precision laser glass cutting machine is currently less than nearly one million yuan and more than three million yuan, which is still not affordable for general glass processing shops. Therefore, it is only applied to some high-end application products, and these large factories can afford to consume. For example, the groove cutting of camera glass, mobile phone touch screen, water drop screen and bangs screen on mobile phones. At present, these glass parts of major mobile phone manufacturers such as apple, Huawei and Xiaomi are basically cut by laser. There are also large format OLED, microled and other display products that have gradually matured in the past two years. The glass screen has also begun to adopt laser cutting. If the display panel screen can adopt laser cutting in large quantities, its market scale will be considerable.
Previously, the technical ability of laser cutting glass has been maintained at the thickness of 3mm for a long time, but it has developed rapidly in the past two years. Previously, domestic manufacturers have realized the rapid cutting of 6mm thickness, and it is said that it has broken through the laser rapid cutting of 10mm thickness. The glass cut by laser has the advantages of clean environment, smooth incision, high efficiency, high precision and complete automation. It is a high-end and efficient way than water cutting. In the future, it is likely to be widely used in the fields of automotive glass, navigator glass, architectural glass and so on.
Not only can laser easily cut glass, it can also weld glass. As we all know, glass splicing is very difficult. This opens up more space for the application of laser in the glass industry.
