1. Transparency is listed as a glass property in the 40 volumes of transparency Wechsler Dictionary and Encyclopedia of the former Soviet Union. Because of their strong bonds, the intrinsic absorption of silicate, borate and phosphate glasses caused by electron excitation is in the ultraviolet region. In the visible and near infrared regions, there is generally no light absorption, so the glass disappears. There are colours. At the same time, the glass is uniform in macroscopical, and there are no particles that can cause light scattering; at the same time, the surface is smooth and will not cause light scattering, so the glass is transparent. If the glass is separated, crystallized or added with opacifier, the glass becomes opaque. Chalcogenide glass, metal glass and other special glasses are opaque because of the absorption band of visible light caused by electron excitation.
2. The tensile strength and impact strength of brittle ordinary glass are much lower than the compressive strength because of the surface defects such as micro-cracks, which is only one-tenth of the latter. There is no plastic flow before fracture. A single crack will lead to radial cracks, and the section will be shell-like.
3. Low thermal conductivity and high electrical insulation ordinary glass has low thermal conductivity. If quartz crystal is compared with quartz glass, the thermal conductivity of quartz crystal parallel to the c axis is 0.14W/(cm`K), perpendicular to the c axis is 0.072 W/(cm`K), and the thermal conductivity of quartz glass is 0.014 W/(cm`K), so touch quartz glass by hand. Glass has a sense of temperature, quartz crystal has a sense of cooling.
4. Higher chemical stability and weatherproof ordinary sodium calcium silicate glass can resist water and acid erosion, but poor alkali resistance, not hydrofluoride and phosphate erosion, so it can be used as packaging containers for food and medicine. Sodium calcium silicate glass can also withstand the weathering of atmospheric moisture and CO2, SO2, and can be used as window glass and building materials. However, glass can react slowly with water and other substances, and be eroded to a certain extent, and there are few harmful substances to precipitate out. Under hot, humid and unventilated conditions, glass is weathered by water and atmosphere, and the surface forms weathered products such as rainbow and white spot, so it needs to be adjusted and processed. In order to improve the chemical stability and weathering resistance of glass, some phosphate glasses and halide glasses have poor chemical stability.
5. Oxygen diffusion coefficient is below 10-11 cm2/s at 1000K in gas barrier and photocatalytic stability soda-lime glass. Oxygen diffusion can be neglected at room temperature. Therefore, glass bottled beer can effectively block oxygen and CO2, CO2 will not escape, and oxygen in the air will not seep. Glass will not ageing after irradiation by light. Glass containing a small amount of Fe2O3 impurity can absorb ultraviolet radiation of 300 nm to prevent deterioration caused by photochemical reaction of beer, medicine and other contents caused by ultraviolet radiation.
