Quartz glass is renowned for its exceptional purity, thermal resistance, and optical clarity, making it indispensable in industries such as semiconductors, optics, and laboratory equipment. However, these same properties that make quartz glass valuable also make it extremely difficult to process. Two of the main challenges lie in high-temperature melting and precision cutting.

1. High-Temperature Melting
Quartz glass is made from high-purity silica (SiO₂), which has a melting point of around 1,700°C to 2,000°C—much higher than that of ordinary glass. Producing it requires specialized electric or oxyhydrogen furnaces capable of reaching ultra-high temperatures. During melting, strict control of temperature and atmosphere is essential to prevent air bubble formation, devitrification, or contamination, which could compromise transparency and mechanical strength.

2. Precision Cutting and Shaping
Once solidified, quartz glass becomes extremely hard and brittle, posing serious challenges in machining. Conventional mechanical tools wear out quickly, so diamond-coated blades or CNC laser systems are often used for cutting and drilling. Even slight vibration or improper feed rate can lead to edge chipping or micro-cracks, which weaken the final product. To improve quality, many manufacturers adopt ultrasonic-assisted or water-jet cutting technologies that reduce thermal stress and achieve smoother edges.

3. Post-Processing and Annealing
After cutting, the glass must undergo fire polishing or annealing to remove residual stress and restore optical smoothness. Without this step, internal tension could cause spontaneous cracking during later use.

Conclusion
Processing quartz glass is a balance between temperature control, mechanical precision, and material purity. Mastering these techniques ensures high-quality components capable of withstanding extreme environments—making quartz glass a true benchmark of advanced glass manufacturing.
